Women’s History Month: The Journey to General Manager

Women have long made up the majority of the meetings, events and hospitality industries, but the higher up the ladder you climb, the fewer women you’ll find. But thankfully, women slowly but surely seem to be leveling out the hospitality industry playing field.

One position in particular has seen significant growth for women, general manager of hotels and other meeting venues.

How did women break the mold and change the industry’s outlook on female leaders? What did that journey look like and how did we get to where we are today?

Hear from women who made the journey to general manager, and what it took to get there, in this special Meetings Today webinar honoring Women’s History Month.

Amy Finsilver
Amy Finsilver
General Manager
XV Beacon Hotel

Amy Finsilver, born and raised in New York, is an award-winning veteran of the Boston hotel scene.

In 1991, she won Where Magazine’s “Concierge of the Year” and shortly after was promoted to director of guest services. A few years later, she was recruited by the Four Seasons Hotel Boston where she worked until 1999, when she was asked to join the opening team of XV Beacon Hotel. Within months, Finsilver was promoted to director of operations. She oversaw the hotel’s opening logistics and was responsible for not only budget planning, vendor relations, employee training, guest services, housekeeping and restaurant operations but also creating an independent luxury brand.

After three exciting years, and to be close to her ill father in New York, she accepted a role with The Olive Group, operated by chef Todd English, as their corporate director of sales and special events. Thereafter, Finsilver transitioned into the wellness sector working for the Sports Club/LA (now Equinox) at The Ritz-Carlton, where she first served as marketing manager and was later promoted to assistant general manager. In 2008, Finsilver rejoined XV Beacon Hotel as general manager.

As the first and now only one of few female general managers in Boston, Finsilver oversees all operations, sales and marketing and on-property management for the 63-room luxury boutique hotel and restaurant Mooo. Under her guidance, the hotel’s website underwent a complete redesign, and she personally retrained every employee to exemplary standards, assuring and delivering exceptional service and value for her guests. Under Finsilver’s watch, XV Beacon’s return-guest rate runs 70%. The hotel has ranked in the top five best hotels by Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler for the past 14 years. Finsilver was awarded 2024 Hotelier of the Year by Historic Hotels of America.
