Feds Temporarily Loosen Passport Restrictions

The U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that many residents traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Bermuda can enter and exit the U.S. by air without a formal passport until Sept. 30.

The new provision only pertains to travelers who have already applied for a passport for summer travel, but have not received it because of longer than expected passport processing times.

Those who have applied can travel with government-issued photo identification as long as they present proof of their passport application. Proof of filing for the application can be obtained by visiting http://travel.state.gov.

The condition is in relation to the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which began its requirement for passports for air travel Jan. 23, 2007.
