Hurricane Dean Spares Yucatan Tourist Sites

Hurricane Dean, which made landfall Aug. 20 and Aug. 21 on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, left Cancun, Cozumel and Jamaica’s tourism infrastructure relatively unscathed.

According to press reports, 300,000 residents were displaced as heavy winds and driving rains hit the Yucatan’s South Coast. Reports from Jamaica indicated there were numerous mudslides and some roads were blocked.

Cancun International Airport remained open and both Kingston’s Norman Manley International Airport and the Cozumel International Airport reopened Aug. 21.

Although many hotels in the region were evacuated as a precautionary measure and some reported minimal structural damage and mild debris, most of them, including the Hilton Cancun Golf & Spa Resort and Montego Bay’s Half Moon Rose Hall resort, reported no significant damage.
