Southwest Airlines will begin flying between Minneapolis-St. Paul and Chicago’s Midway Airport beginning in March 2009, the low-fare airline carrier announced.
Dallas-based Southwest had been pursued for over a decade by the Metropolitan Airports Commission, which owns and operates Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, in order to bring in competition against Northwest, the airport’s dominant carrier.
Southwest said it will not be planning for rapid growth or additional destinations from Minneapolis-St. Paul until officials see how demand develops on the route to Chicago.
