The city council here dissolved a tax levy that would have helped finance the expansion of the Barker’s Island Inn Resort & Conference Center due to the continued economic slump, The Daily Telegram reported.
The development stumbled in late 2007 when bids came in about $5 million higher than estimates. When the credit market tumbled, the project never recovered.
The expansion would have tripled the size of the meeting space, from 3,000 square feet to 9,000 square feet. The plan would also have expanded the restaurant and bar, remodeled the hotel, expanded parking and built a new timeshare tower with condos, which would have served as hotel rooms when owners were away.
“It goes back to ‘we critically need convention space in the city of Superior’ in order to compete in the regional area for activities,’” said Mayor Dave Ross. “We're going to try to find another way to get it done.”
