SLC May Loosen Liquor Laws

Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker said it’s time to relax the city’s liquor laws to draw more visitors, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

The mayor wants to eliminate the two-bar-per-block restriction and create a downtown entertainment district that is more tolerant of alcohol. Other city officials have responded positively.

Scott Beck, president and CEO of the Salt Lake CVB, said creating the density of neighborhood pubs in town is a good way to draw visitors.

“We would prefer it to be like it is in every other city, where there isn’t a limit,” Beck said. “And with the free market, organically, those things will work where they are supported.”

State lawmakers passed legislation to relax state liquor laws earlier this month.
