About 35,000 public venues in Mexico City were shut down or told to serve only takeout meals Tuesday as officials tried to contain the swine flu outbreak, CNN.com reported.
The city mandated that convention halls, bars, clubs, theaters, pool halls, gyms and sports complexes are to be closed until May 6, Juan Jose Garcia Ochoa, a city government official, told the news organization.
By early Tuesday, the swine flu outbreak in Mexico was suspected of causing 152 deaths and more than 1,600 illnesses. At press time, cases of the swine flu are confirmed in New York, California, Texas, Kansas and Ohio.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a travel warning on April 27, urging all Americans to avoid non-essential travel to Mexico.
