The Atlantic City Convention Center received a $1.5 million grant from the state of New Jersey for the construction of a single wind turbine to provide power to the facility.
“We still have many steps in the process, including environmental studies and permitting, before we can begin to construct the turbine, but this is an excellent first step,” said Jeff Vassar, president of the Atlantic City CVB.
The building already features many eco-friendly elements, including the largest single solar roof system in the U.S., which provides 26 percent of the facility’s electricity.
The wind turbine would take about 16 months to construct. The estimated cost of the project is $3.4 million. The funding comes from the state’s $73 million allocation of funds from the federal stimulus package that was approved by Congress last February.
