Mayor Proposes Cuts to Chicago Tourism

Mayor Richard Daley proposed a new city budget that would slash almost half of the money the city grants to the Chicago Convention and Tourism Bureau to attract meetings and leisure travelers.

The plan would reduce the city’s $2.37 million share of funding by $1 million. The city council is scheduled to vote on the plan Dec. 2.

Daley also called for consolidating marketing efforts, bringing together such agencies as the convention bureau; the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, which owns and operates McCormick Place and Navy Pier; World Business Chicago, which sells the city as a business destination; and the Chicagoland COC.
