San Diego Unveils CC Design Plans

The San Diego Convention Center Corp. selected a design team for a proposed convention center expansion that would give San Diego the most contiguous exhibit hall space on the West Coast.

The winning team, comprised of Fentress Architects, John Portman & Associates and Civitas Inc., submitted a proposed design that includes a five-acre rooftop park with 360-degree views of downtown San Diego and Cornado Bay. A hotel of up to 500 rooms is also part of the expansion plans.

The expansion, built for LEED certification, would give the center an additional 225,000 square feet of exhibit space, 100,000 square feet of meeting room space and a new 80,000-square-foot ballroom that would be the largest at any convention center on the West Coast. When completed, the center would have 750,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit hall space.
