The former Dockum Rexall Drugstore, site of an historic protest during the Civil Rights era, will be redeveloped as the Ambassador Wichita, a 117-room boutique hotel set to open in downtown Wichita, Kan., late next year.
In 1958, the drugstore was the site of a lunch counter sit-in protesting its policy of not serving black patrons. Within a few weeks, all Rexall drugstores in the state had changed their policies. The hotel will include exhibits on the building's Civil Rights history.
