Unionized Hyatt hotel workers in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Honolulu launched a week-long strike on Sept. 8 in concern over a contract battle now in its second year.
According to Anne Marie Stassel, spokesman for the Unite Here hotel workers union, the strike is not over a wage and benefit package, but over demands for changes in work rules. Among changes being asked for is a reduction in the number of rooms housekeepers are required to clean each day.
The strike affects 3,000 hotel workers at six hotels—the Hyatt Regency Chicago, Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, Andaz West Hollywood, Hyatt Regency Waikiki, Hyatt Regency San Francisco and Grand Hyatt San Francisco.
