WASHINGTON DC
AP - The team that restored Washington’s historic Willard Hotel plans to build a four-star resort hotel on the city’s Southwest Waterfront as part of a massive redevelopment.
Washington-based Carr Hospitality and InterContinental Hotels Group want to create a resort destination in the city with a 268-room hotel.
Hammad Shah, president of Carr Hospitality, tells The Washington Post he is in final negotiations to purchase the site near 9th and Water streets. Shah says the hotel would take advantage of the Washington Channel location with a 5,000-square-foot rooftop lounge and ballrooms overlooking the water.
Developers plan to begin a $2 billion redevelopment of the area in late 2012 to make it a mixed-use neighborhood called The Wharf. Monty Hoffman of developer PN Hoffman says the hotel will be a major attraction.
