COLUMBUS, Ohio
The backers of the Hilton Columbus Downtown, rising across High Street from the Greater Columbus Convention Center, marked a milestone in the hotel's development yesterday by holding a 'topping off' ceremony for the 532-room building. The property will open next September.
The new hotel is adjacent to the Greater Columbus Convention Center. It does not appear, from early reports, to have its own meeting space but the two buildings will be connected.
"This is enhancing the competitiveness of Columbus as a destination," Christie says, underscoring the importance of the convention business to the local economy. Now that Columbus' assets and stature are growing, adds Mayor Michael B. Coleman, "We need a place for people to sleep overnight."
