SAN JOSE, Calif.
Following a year of organizational changes at Team San Jose--the city’s CVB and operator of the San Jose Convention Center and various cultural venues--San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed and the City Council unanimously approved the city manager’s recommendation to discontinue work on a request for proposal for management of the convention center and cultural facilities.
“This is a great signal to our customers and the community that Team San Jose is here to serve their needs,” said Bill Sherry, CEO of Team San Jose. Today’s vote of confidence is a positive move forward,”.“With a new state-of-the-art convention facility coming online in 2013 that proudly reflects our position as the Capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose has a lot to offer convention planners.'
In voting to halt the RFP process, city leaders cited Team San Jose’s strong performance results and structural changes to the organization that have increased focus and accountability.
Sherry came to the bureau 10 months ago, following the departure of long-time CEO Dan Fenton, and shook up the organizational chart and shifted attention onto an upgrade of the convention center, he told Meetings Focus. After a great deal of change, his efforts seem to have worked. “The wake-up call paid off,” Sherry said. “We have a renewed focus now.”
