Expansion Considered in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO

Is 1.3 million square feet large enough? This week the San Antonio City Council will take a look at that question when a study is presented on a recommendation to expand the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center.

Mike Sawaya, the city’s director of conventions, sports and entertainment facilities, said to remain competitive with other cities, the convention center needs to be bigger. "[The convention center] is one of the highest economic impacts for the city of San Antonio," explained Sawaya. "The convention is the engine that drives a lot of business."

While the details of the proposed expansion have not been released, the plan calls for the building to grow eastward, towards the Alamo Dome. A study done by a consulting firm also advises the city to tear down the 42-year old West Building of the convention center. The removal of the West Building would allow for the potential expansion of HemisFair Park, according to the study done by Populous Inc.
