New L.A.-area Conv. Center Opens Next Month

POMONA, Calif.

It has taken some time, but the conference center at Sheraton Fairplex Hotel is almost ready to open its doors. Crews are taking care of the final stages of construction while other workers concentrate on landscaping the area with plants, such as olive trees and citrus. The landscaping connects the conference center to the L.A. County Fair. Crews are expected to have the facility ready for necessary inspections to hit a goal of opening Jan. 4.

The $28 million facility has already been booked for use in January by corporate groups, professional associations and some social functions, said Tim McGill, director of sales and marketing for the Sheraton.

The largest room, a 12,460-square-foot ballroom that can accommodate a 1,000-seat banquet, will be the biggest in eastern Los Angeles County. In addition, the center has a 4,032- square-foot conference room, and several additional spaces.

Building 8, an existing 33,600-square-foot exhibit hall, is adjacent to the conference center and has had upgrades made that include sound system improvements. Upgrades to the area near the conference center and Building 8 will continue to take place gradually in the coming years leading to the construction of a garden setting that will connect the area to the hotel.
