PORT HURON, Mich.
The Thomas Edison Inn will remain open while it is transformed into a Hilton hotel. Work on the landmark hotel will begin this month or in February.
Renovating the hotel is part of a $27.8 million publicly and privately funded plan to remake the inn and restaurant, build a $9 million convention center and open a cooking school along the Thomas Edison Parkway.
Hotel and restaurant renovations are expected to be complete by July, and the convention center will be completed by May 2013. A culinary school and dorms will be finished by November.
The convention center is slated to offer 40,000 square feet of function space.
