The Savannah International Trade & Convention Center has developed a comprehensive green plan that covers all areas of facility management, including energy efficiency, air quality, water conservation, waste management and catering.
New initiatives at the 330,000-square-foot facility—where the goal is to improve energy efficiency by 10 percent each year—include the installation of new fluorescent lighting in the Chatham Ballroom; occupancy sensors in public restrooms and back services halls; a plate frame heat exchanger that conserves energy; a system for facility blackouts and brownouts; a donation program for leftover supplies from conventions to local schools and plastic signage to area businesses; and Heppa filters in vacuums.
\Future initiatives include: large diameter ceiling fan technology that reduces energy consumption in exhibit halls and concourses, which could result in a $19,000-$35,000 reduction in electrical use; upgrading 400 and 1,000 watt metal halide fixtures with energy efficient fluorescent and LED lighting; roof mounted solar panels; and installation of high efficiency hot water heaters or solar water heating capabilities for public restrooms.
