PHILADELPHIA
The Pennsylvania Convention Center has announced that, effective this July 1, it will get rid of the 8 percent labor management fee that has been charged to customers and exhibitors for supplying unionized labor services at the facility.
Officials said the dropping of the fee is an initial step in the transition to a new business model that will greatly assist in lowering labor costs which have plagued customers of the building.
The announcement comes as the Meeting Metropolis, an event designed to showcase the newly expanded convention center, takes place here April 3 to 5. Meeting planners and decision makers from the national convention center industry have been invited to experience the expanded space and its 21st century state-of-the-art technological upgrades during the three-day information session that includes seminars, tours, and vendor displays.
There are a number of additional steps that will be fully implemented by July 2012, according to building officials—though they did not elaborate—all of which support a “customer-centric” focus.
