Could a hotel be developed on top of the Hawaii Convention Center Hawaii Convention Center? That is the question Hawaii lawmakers are asking.
Specifically, they are asking the Hawaii Tourism Authority Hawaii Tourism Authority “to study the feasibility of developing a hotel, training hotel, or other commercial retail facility, as determined by the board of directors of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, above the Hawaii Convention Center facility.”
The resolution asks the HTA to study the site, logistics, traffic and infrastructure demands associated with a possible hotel on top of the center, as well as to find out what would be required in terms of design, construction and funding. The HTA is also asked to gauge the interest from private developers, among other entities.
HTA supports the resolution but is concerned about potential costs of such a project, said HTA President and CEO Mike McCartney.
“The feasibility of developing a hotel above the Hawaii Convention Center facility may incur costs—such as charges for contracting traffic experts, development consultants, and financial advisors—which HTA has not budgeted for,” he said.
