Legionnaires' Disease Plagues Luxury Chicago Hotel

CHICAGO

The Chicago Department of Public Health has alerted the JW Marriott Chicago that three previous guests of the hotel have been diagnosed Legionnaires’ disease, a type of a pneumonia.  The hotel responded immediately investigated and, on the advice of CDPH,  in drained and closed the property’s fountain, hot tub and pool.

Currently, CDPH believes there is no health risk to guests or employees staying at the hotel. Still, the JW Marriott Chicago is notifying employees and guests who stayed at the hotel from July 16 through August 15 of the situation and to seek medical attention if they experience any flu-like symptoms.

This disease is contracted by breathing in a warm mist or vapor contaminated with the Legionella bacteria.  It is not spread from one person to another. If you have questions or believe you may have been exposed, call the Chicago Department of Public Health special hotline at 312-746-4835 from Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CDT.

For hotel-related questions, call Marriott Customer Care at 866-211-4610.  If calling from outside the U.S. or Canada,  call 402-390-3265.
