TELLURIDE, Colo.
The Mountain Village Town Council has decided to put any plans for the Telluride Conference Center on hold as the town keeps a close eye on budget constraints.
Expansions and improvements to the large multi-use facility, which is located near Mountain Village’s core, were suggested by a study commissioned by the town, the Telluride Mountain Village Owners Association, Telluride Ski and Golf and The Peaks Resort. The study was first presented in May.
But council members expressed concerns over the study’s feasibility in the short-term during a recent meeting.Mayor Bob Delves said any improvements to the conference center, which is owned and financially supported by the town, would have to be considered on a long-term basis.
“I understand there is a long-term vision of expanding the conference center and that it’s the [comprehensive plan],” Delves said. “But I don’t think it’s in the cards in the near future — the town doesn’t have the money. I don’t think the voters will support a bond measure, and even to get more lodging tax, the voters have to approve that.”
