SEATTLE
The Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) will celebrate the grand opening of its new location at Lake Union Park on Dec. 29. The beautifully restored Naval Reserve Armory will provide MOHAI with nearly 50,000-square feet of exhibition and program space that will inspire visitors to connect with the power of history.
The inaugural year exhibits will highlight the advantages of the new museum space by incorporating interactive features and hands-on activities. MOHAI’s premier core exhibit on the Seattle experience, which encircles the second story of the building, will allow visitors to explore the region’s history—from wilderness to world city—with thousands of artifacts and images. The exhibit starts and ends with a Prologue/Epilogue Theatre which helps contextualize the region’s history through first person accounts from past and present community members.
Along with this entirely new core exhibit, MOHAI has teamed up with various local organizations to create three temporary exhibits, each exploring a unique aspect of the area’s local culture. 2013 will also bring the opening of the Center for Innovation, a new project exploring the culture of entrepreneurship and creativity that has flourished in the Pacific Northwest.
Facility rentals for private events, lectures, galas, fundraisers and wedding receptions are available at MOHAI. Meeting and event planners have the following venue options at MOHAI:
• Grand Atrium
Seats up to 400 for a meal or accommodates up to 700 in a reception-style event. The atrium comprises a critical part of the exhibits and will only be available outside of public hours.
• Lakefront Pavilion
Located on the northwest corner of the building, this space will accommodate 120 seated or a 145 reception-style event. It may be rented separately when the museum is open.
• Meeting rooms
Located on the northeast corner of the building, this space will hold up to 25 people, or the two rooms may be combined for meetings of up to 50.
• Lakeview Terrace and West Patio
Two outdoor spaces will be available during the summer months (June-September): the Lakeview Terrace on the northeast corner of the roof, hosts receptions for up to 75 and the West Patio, just north of the main entrance doors, can accommodate up 200.
