FTC Cautions Against Use of Hidden “Resort Fees”

The Federal Trade Commission has warned 22 hotel operators about the use of potentially illegal “resort fees” and surcharges that are not included in the quoted price, yet significantly add to to the final cost of a stay there.

A spokesperson for the FTC said they will give the operators a change to come into compliance voluntarily, before their names are released. The hotels were notified based on consumer complaints received by the FTC.

A similar “drip pricing” technique involves advertising a certain price and tacking on additional charges once a booking transaction is completed.
