Snazzy New Spa for New York ‘Castle’

TARRYTOWN, New York

Castle Hotel & Spa in Westchester County, N.Y. has broken  ground for the seven-month construction of the luxury $9 million THANN Sanctuary Spa on the sprawling 100-year old estate overlooking the Hudson River in Tarrytown.  The Medieval-style structure is reminiscent of the revered Lismore Castle in County Waterford, Ireland.

THANN™ Sanctuary Spas offer a wide variety of luxurious spa treatments based on THANN’s art of natural therapy, where all the senses are awakened by the unique holistic spa concept and ambience.   The THANN™ Sanctuary Spa at Castle Hotel & Spa will be the first of its kind in the United States.

Interior Design

The interior design by Gettys will incorporate warm tones and soothing light with carefully designed furnishings procured from Thailand that induce calm and tranquility in contrast to the frenzied life outside.  The holistic treatment approach aims to rediscover inner physical and mental wellness offered in a wide variety of treatments including the signature massage – a deep-tissue oil massage using palm strokes and thumb pressure to relieve and heal muscular pains.  The THANN signature oil blend conveys healing and reduces tension to reinvigorate and relax stress and tension.

Architectural Design

According to Mike Flynn, AIA, LEED AP at Irvine, CA-based KTGY, THANN™ Sanctuary Spa at Castle Hotel & Spa is designed to be a simple, sophisticated building utilizing a low profile, stone walls and minimal exterior openings to blend with its peaceful setting overlooking the serene landscape.  A curved stone wall guides the guest through an opening in the wall into a sheltered interior courtyard.  The Spa walls flanking the courtyard are transparent floor-to-ceiling glass creating a contrast with the solid stone wall exterior.

The 7,800-square-foot Spa features separate locker facilities, hot pools, and steam rooms for men and women, seven treatment rooms, and a VIP treatment suite.  There is also an expansive relaxation lounge with tranquil views of the wooded grounds.  The atmosphere of quiet and privacy is supported by architectural screening, protected views, and acoustical isolation.  Interior finishes emphasize natural materials, subtle colors, and minimal detail.

Sustainable features of the Spa include a vegetated roof, high efficiency heating and cooling systems, high tech lighting controls, and well insulated walls and roof. THANN™ Sanctuary Spa will be LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).  LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a voluntary, consensus-based, market¬-driven program that provides third-party verification of green buildings and addresses the entire lifecycle of a building.
