Ron Melson, Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza – Cincinnati, Ohio

What service can you provide to groups that they normally might not receive?

I feel groups staying at the Netherland Plaza are somewhat surprised with the level of service a concierge can provide. Restaurant recommendations, must-see Cincinnati sights and fun historical facts are just a few benefits groups can enjoy by stopping by the concierge desk.

What are your bar or nightclub recommendations?

I feel fortunate being a concierge in Cincinnati, as we have quite an extensive collection of nightlife.  So, when it comes time to recommending a bar, I try to help the guest chose a spot that they enjoy. For example, if a couple wants to go dancing, I would suggest Whiskey Bar where they can dance the night away. If looking for local flavor and friendly conversation, Arnold’s the city’s oldest bar would be the call. On Friday & Saturday evenings, the hotel’s Bar at Palm Court has live jazz and throughout the week Blue Wisp also features jazz. So the key is to determine what kind of experience the guest is looking for and then find the spot for a great time.

Can you recommend a good place to take a stroll?

When showing a guest where to take a stroll, I like to help the guest get a feel of the city. I will often suggest starting on Vine Street, just outside our door and head north for about 12 blocks. On this path, Vine Street changes from the central business district to a newly remodeled area known as Over the Rhine.

Another great destination is to the Banks – the city’s newest development on the riverfront. This area features a park with walking paths, fountains, restaurants and great views of both the city skyline and the Ohio River. The Banks is located just a few blocks from the hotel.

Are there any quirky places we should check out?

I think one of the most unique attractions is the American Sign Museum. Full of signs from around the world, it is a memorable experience.

What is an unusual request from a group you’ve had?

We once had a touring rock band staying with us that had a couple of days off. They asked me to find a hockey rink with equipment that they could rent for a day. And they asked if I could find eight guys they could play against?

A party of 12 wants to have dinner right away. What restaurant can accommodate last-minute requests of this size?

As daunting as this may seem, with the connections I have developed over the years, the choice is really the guests’. Now the party may be seated at two tables and if theatre is in town, the seating may be after 8pm, but my guests will have dinner.

What’s a unique event that has taken place at your property?

We are very fortunate to have a wonderful and unique hotel – one of the world’s finest examples of French art deco – so that combined with our AAA Four-Diamond service, we have hosted a wide variety of events including the inaugural Cincinnati Les Amis d’Escoffier dinner – a exclusive dining club that previously only had chapters in Paris, New York City and Chicago, to a Romney fundraiser.
