San Diego Tourism Dodges Bullet

SAN DIEGO

The San Diego Tourism Authority (SDTA), which recently seemed to be on the verge of closing due to an ongoing financial controversy, appears to be in safe shape following the release of frozen funds by the city’s mayor Bob Filner.

According to various published reports Monday, Filner agreed to release $5.7 million in frozen funds following the approval of $500K by the Tourism Marketing District for San Diego’s planned centennial celebration in Balboa Bark in 2015, an ongoing year-long affair.

The freeing up of the funds for the TMDA means that San Diego’s official tourism marketing arm will remain open and its 85 staffers will remain employed.

Below is the official statement from Todd Shallan, chairman of the SDTA's Board of Directors, regarding the cancellation of San Diego Tourism's closure:

"With the city's reported release of tourism marketing funds, the planned closure of the San Diego Tourism Authority on Monday, June 3 has been cancelled. We will be open for business, continuing our important work to attract visitors to one of the finest tourist destinations in the world. The Tourism Authority would like to thank Mayor Filner and the Tourism Marketing District for resolving this matter."
