Flood Crisis Continues in Colorado

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo.

Rainstorms continued to pound parts of Colorado over the weekend, impeding rescue efforts and even stranding a number of rescue workers on Monday.

Additionally, The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management announced today that 12 additional counties have been added to the Sept. 12, 2013, presidential emergency disaster declaration for the Colorado flooding in Boulder, El Paso and Larimer counties.

The additional areas added to the disaster declaration for flooding include Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Clear Creek, Denver, Fremont, Jefferson, Morgan, Logan, Pueblo, Washington and Weld counties.

In a separate action on Saturday, Sept. 14, President Obama also declared a major disaster declaration for Boulder County.

Up to 1,000 civilians were still awaiting evacuation as of Monday afternoon, with approximately 500 people missing, and up to six individuals were feared to be dead. Statistics from the Colorado Office of Emergency Management reported that more than 1,500 homes have been decimated and close to 18,000 had been damaged. In Boulder County alone more than 100 miles of roadway are in need of repair and between 20 and 30 bridges have been damaged.

Officials are hoping that a break in the severe rain will help ongoing rescue and repair efforts, as following a slight chance of Tuesday showers the rain is expected to terminate for several days.
