As part of a $30 million renovation project, the remodeling of 100,000 square feet of meeting space at Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center began on May 19 and is expected to be completed in December 2014
The meeting space at the Detroit Marriot spans three floors with 34 separate rooms, and the renovation will enhance functionality as well as aesthetics. The renovation will be done in phases enabling group functions to continue without disruption.
Additionally, this downtown Detroit hotel will completely refurbish its two-level Concierge Lounge located on the 56th & 57th floors. Available to elite members of Marriott Rewards and those guests staying in Concierge guest rooms, the Concierge lounge offers a place to socialize and enjoy complimentary refreshments.
Renovation Timeline and Theme
One of the tallest buildings in the Western Hemisphere, Marriott International first announced plans to renovate its 71-floor hotel in downtown Detroit in August 2013. Renovations to 1,329 guest rooms began in February 2014 and are expected to be finished in October 2014. The renovation of the 52 suites will be completed by December 2014.
The 70-floor hotel will continue to remain open throughout the project with a few floors undergoing reconstruction at a time.
Similar to the decor of the new guest rooms, the hotel's meeting areas will have a comfortably modern theme reflecting the vibe of the city and the fabric of the region. The design team took inspiration from the Detroit River and the round, concrete and glass architectural features of the Renaissance Center. Grey, taupe, watery blue, moss green and touches of purple combine for a soft yet striking new color palate. Textured wall vinyl on large pillars will resemble ripples of cool water while polished wood paneling adds warmth to the space.
Meeting Space Updates and More
Perhaps most importantly, the public areas outside the meeting rooms have been totally rethought to allow for the addition of pre-function space for small group gatherings.
All-new flexible seating areas and workspaces will be filled with organically-shaped and ultra-contemporary furnishings. An overhead canopy will help define separate areas of congregation and lighted wall panels will feature a stylized skyline of Detroit. Another decorative focal point of the new pre-function space will be an enormous glass light fixture that is a stunning work of art in itself resembling droplets of water suspended from the ceiling.
Also beginning a major transformation this month is the Detroit Marriott's concierge lounge. It will be totally refreshed with chic design elements like those of a modern automobile showroom -- sleek furnishings, shiny edges, contemporary seating, polished surfaces, burled walnut and silver mesh. Artwork featuring actual car parts will also adorn the space that offers a breathtaking view of the city.
Additionally, the two-level salon will also be reconfigured for better traffic flow and lighting.
