Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants has completed a multimillion-dollar renovation and redesign of Donovan House, a Kimpton Hotel. The renovation of the downtown Washington, D.C. hotel encompasses all 193 guest rooms and suites, elevators, and hallway corridors and features a more cosmopolitan look and new business-friendly amenities.
CBT, a Boston-based multidisciplinary interior, architecture and urban design firm specializing in luxury hospitality design, interior architecture, and urban design, was hired to reinvent Donovan House's ultra-modern design to better accommodate business travelers.
Business-Ready Room Additions
A primary focus of the renovation was the addition of a desk in every guest room, as previously only select rooms had dedicated workspace. Donovan House's new standard five-foot dark oak finished desks feature built-in, flip-up outlets with standard power and USB sockets. Guests can pull up a grey ergonomic chair and work under ample lighting from a Humanscale Horizon LED task light, which is also a part of the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection.
In addition to the new functional additions for business travelers, Donovan House's rooms also feature stylish new décor with a sophisticated color palette of contemporary grey and deep purple with rust accents. Clean lines abound with new iridescent iris faux leather wraparound headboards, sleek black and white side tables, and the addition of a custom rust-colored faux crocodile bench, a pattern which is echoed on the room's grey carpet.
Travelers can relax in canopy beds swathed in Kimpton's signature zebra print Frette sheets and topped with a decorative rust throw pillow while watching a new 55-inch inset television. The décor is minimalistic and adorned with a single circular black and white print of the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Suite Upgrades
Ten of Donovan House's King Suites also received an upgrade with the addition of a pull-out grey chenille sofa bed and an oak-finished executive table with built-in outlets and gold winged chairs that can comfortably seat up to six people for a meeting.
The hotel's principle suite with sweeping views of Thomas Circle, the Donovan Suite, also received a stylish update including a new sectional sofa, patterned accent rug, and hardwood floors in the living room area. A contemporary molecular smoked glass chandelier hangs above a long dark wood table that seats 10, and the walls feature a custom graphic patchwork black and white print of iconic Washington, D.C. monuments. The bedroom area mirrors the other guestrooms with the addition of a pull-out grey chenille sofa bed and an extra workspace.
Several of the hotel's signature design elements, originally conceived by Studio GAIA, remain, such as the cocoon spiral showers, futuristic club chairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows in most rooms.
