Cleveland Awaits Big Vote on Republican Convention

CLEVELAND, Ohio

The Republican National Committee (RNC) will vote Friday, August 8 on whether to formally approve Cleveland as the site for the 2016 Republican National Convention. The voting follows a July 8 recommendation of the city by the RNC Site Selection Committee, and will take place at the group’s annual summer gathering in Chicago.

While a contingency representing Cleveland is expected to be on hand, no additional formal presentation is planned, and confidential negotiations have already reportedly taken place.

The RNC is also expected to designate the official starting date for the event—choosing between June 27 and July 18—though that decision is said to be a few months away.

The voting committee making the big decision Friday is composed of 168 representatives, with each U.S. state having at least three voters included in the process.
