Cleveland Gets Official GOP Nod for 2016 Convention

CLEVELAND

The Republican National Committee cast a unanimous vote on Friday, Aug. 8, to make Cleveland the host of its 2016 National Convention.

The vote took place in Chicago during the annual GOP summer meeting, confirming the tentative recommendation recently made for Cleveland as the 2016 convention site.

Cleveland hasn’t hosted a national convention since 1936, though it was a finalist for the 2012 Republican convention held in Tampa. A wealth of recent developments in the city, including new and improved hotel properties, reportedly led to its selection for the 2016 affair. The recently constructed Cleveland Convention Center and neighboring Global Center for Health Innovation likely played a factor in the decision as well.

The 2016 event could begin as early as June 18, though a late July kickoff is also under discussion according to reports.
