LOS CABOS, Mexico
While the extensive and widespread damage caused by Hurricane Odile remains clearly visible, substantial restoration progress has already been made since mid-September.
According to IVI DMC², a destination management agency that does business in the Los Cabos region, the Los Cabos Int’l Airport is slated to officially reopen on October 10, and the city’s supply of potable water has been totally restored. Dozens of restaurants have returned to business, while others are likely awaiting the return of a robust tourist influx.
Many major hotels are now up and running again, with dozens more coming back online shortly, though many organized tours have been canceled until the airport has returned to service. IVI DMC² recommends moving back any current visiting (or meeting) plans until mid-October or later, but emphasizes the resilience of Mexico’s tourism infrastructure and expects substantial restoration to be both rapid and dramatic.
Other key updates include:
- 95% of the power is expected to be restored by October 7.
- Internet restoration is complete in most areas.
- Approximately 5,000 hotel rooms in Los Cabos are expected to open by Oct. 15; 7,000 by Nov. 15; and 10,000 by Dec. 15.
- The cruise ship terminal and marina are undamaged.
- Bisbee's Fishing Tournament is on as scheduled for October 17.
- Telmex has restored telecommunications (telephone, internet) to 100% of the area.
- Most gas stations are now operating.
It is advised that anyone with upcoming plans to visit the Los Cabos area check in with their hotel, tourism or business contacts well in advance. Area officials expect a rapid recovery for the popular tourist region, but it will take some time to get everything back to normal.
