HONOLULU
Mike McCartney, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, is leaving the bureau to pursue other opportunities. A new leader is reportedly slated to be named on November 20.
Here is the full statement from the departing McCartney, shared in an official open letter press release on November 7:
Aloha,
Since 2009, I have had the honor and privilege to serve as the president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your partnership, collaboration and friendship over the years. All of you play an integral role in supporting Hawaii's tourism economy, one of the state's largest industries and economic drivers.
Together we have persevered through tough times and by remaining authentic and committed to preserving and promoting Hawaii's unique people, place and culture, we have succeeded in recovering and boosting the state's tourism economy. Two years of record-breaking visitor arrivals and spending, which is on track for a third year of growth, is the result of your hard work, and I am proud and honored to have had the opportunity to work with and learn from all of you.
I recently accepted the position of chief of staff for Governor-elect David Ige and will be leaving the Hawaii Tourism Authority effective November 21, 2014. In my new position, I will continue serving the state of Hawaii and will do all that I can to continue to support you and Hawaii's visitor industry.
An interim president and CEO will be appointed by the HTA board of directors on November 20, 2014.
Aloha and Mahalo,
Mike McCartney
