San Antonio Details $43M Alamodome Upgrade

SAN ANTONIO

San Antonio is investing $43 million into its 65,000-seat Alamodome. Set in historic downtown and connected to the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center by a walking path, the Alamodome places meeting and event attendees in the heart of historic San Antonio.

“The Alamodome will undergo the most significant capital improvement program in its 23-year history,” said Michael Sawaya, executive director of convention & sports facilities for the City of San Antonio. “Improvements to the Alamodome will modernize the venue, allowing it to be more competitive with other stadiums around the country, and attract high profile national events to San Antonio.”

The Alamodome is within walking distance of the River Walk, the Alamo, thousands of hotel rooms and numerous shops, restaurants and attractions. Scheduled for completion in November 2017, the venue is designed to accommodate various sports, large tradeshows, and theater and stadium concerts.

Renovations will include:

  • A transformation of the outdoor North Plaza to include more contiguous event space.
  • An 18,600-square-foot East and West Concourse expansion with upgraded concessions areas and a new terrace club.
  • A new 24,000-square-foot multi-use space.
  • New technology including two LED video walls and ribbon boards.
  • A new visiting team locker room.

“Aside from benefiting San Antonio’s overall meetings package, the Alamodome enhancements are vital to maintaining and growing San Antonio’s ability to host sporting events such as the Valero Alamo Bowl,” said San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau Executive Director, Casandra Matej. “One of the first events to utilize the revitalized Alamodome will be the NCAA Final Four in 2018.”

Aside from coming Alamodome renovations, San Antonio has recently expanded its historic River Walk and will debut a transformed Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in January 2016.
