Detroit Resurgence Inspires Hotel Remodel

DETROIT

The latest story in Detroit, is that of the new Trumbull and Porter hotel. Trumbull and Porter is the reinvention of one of the city's iconic hotels, the Corktown Inn, which began life as Detroit's Holiday Inn at the height of the popularity of the family road trip in the late 1960s.

It moved from the Holiday Inn brand to become a boutique hotel with a name that paid homage to the Irish-settled area near downtown called Corktown. Soon thereafter it became known as the Corktown Hotel. Today it is again on the edge of a country-wide movement as hard-working cities like Detroit regain their past glory through an admirable dedication to the city and its community spirit.

The 144-room Trumbull and Porter was purchased by an investor in Los Angeles who felt a deep connection to Detroit. The hotel will have a soft launch in January 2016 and its official grand opening will soon follow. The renovation will touch all aspects of the hotel including guest rooms, drinks and dining, fitness center and outdoor space. The fitness center features views of the city.

A beer garden, courtyard music venue, a private dining room (the Steak Room), and meeting space for smaller events will reportedly round out the hotel's offerings.

Nearly all the work and supplies for the $9 million project are being sourced in Detroit. The hotel's management is creating partnerships between other area businesses as well. Hotel bikes are in production using Detroit bicycle manufacturer, Detroit Bikes. The hotel has also partnered with Anthology Coffee and Batch Brewing Company to provide local coffee and craft beer options.

The Trumbull and Porter Hotel is close to area attractions such as Ford Stadium, Joe Louis Arena, Comerica Park, Detroit Riverwalk, Quicken Loans headquarters, Mexicantown and Greektown.

Behind the Trumbull and Porter hotel is a courtyard that hopes to find new life as a music and art venue. City residents and visitors will be able to enjoy local bands in warm weather months in a casual lawn setting at the hotel. The full-service Red Dunn restaurant and Burroughs Lounge will open after launch.
