The U.S. Department of State issued a worldwide travel alert on Monday, November 23, notifying U.S. citizens of possible travel risks due to increased terrorist threats, in wake of the recent attacks in Paris.
According to the official release, “current information states that ISIL (aka Da’esh), al-Qa’ida, Boko Haram, and other terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions.” The report goes on to reference extremists targeting large sporting events, theatres, open markets and aviation services.
The State Department also provided some information to help “U.S. citizens to exercise vigilance when in public places or using transportation” and encouraged travelers to be aware of their immediate surroundings.
According to the release U.S. citizens planning to travel should:
- Follow the instructions of local authorities. Monitor media and local information sources and factor updated information into personal travel plans and activities.
- Be prepared for additional security screening and unexpected disruptions.
- Stay in touch with family members and ensure they know how to reach you in case of emergency.
