QUEBEC CITY, Canada
The Québec City Convention Centre, already recognized for its leadership in sustainable development, added a new environmental certification to its collection at the LEED Canada-CI (commercial interiors) gold level.
The Canada Green Building Council verified that the Québec City Convention Centre has met its very exacting environmental standards in building and outfitting its 73,000-square-foot addition.
“More than ever the environment is coming to be recognized as the key global issue of our time,” said Québec City Convention Centre President and CEO Pierre-Michel Bouchard. “The Paris Climate Change Conference currently underway reflects this. For us, it’s important that the facilities and services we provide to our clientele meet the highest environmental standards, and for years we’ve been redoubling our efforts in sustainable development. This LEED certification of the new part of our Centre shows it’s working."
The review for certification covers six environmental categories: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, indoor environmental quality, and innovation and design process.
The project was particularly noted for outstanding performance in the following areas:
- Energy consumption: 21.31 percent lower than that of base-case buildings.
- Water consumption: 40.72 percent lower than standard.
- Construction waste management: 83.15 percent diverted from landfill.
The efforts made to maintain exemplary interior air quality for those working on the project were also praised, as was the high percentage of construction materials and furnishings produced close to the site and, in the innovation category, the environmental education program.
