WASHINGTON, D.C.
Euro Capital Properties announced the opening of The Watergate Hotel after undergoing an extensive $125 million renovation to restore the property to its historic splendor.
The hotel has been closed for renovations since 2007.
An American icon situated on the banks of the Potomac River, The Watergate Hotel offers an upscale urban resort experience for leisure and business travelers. Originally designed by Italian architect Luigi Moretti in 1961 to look like a sail on the Potomac, the hotel came to epitomize the sophistication of its time when it opened in March 1967.
The hotel's current owners, Euro Capital Properties, tapped designer Ron Arad and Italian designer Moroso to complement the avant-garde architecture with bold curves and mid-century modern design while restoring some of hotel's original structures, such as the staircase and indoor pool.
Acclaimed architectural and interior design firm BBGM was the architect for the project.
"The Watergate is undoubtedly one of the most glamorous and illustrious hotels in the world," said Rakel Cohen, senior vice president of design and development for Euro Capital Properties. "We paid meticulous attention to every detail in its renovation and we're excited to bring our vision to life.”
The hotel consists of 336 guest rooms, half of which include balconies, six Diplomat Suites, 24 premier suites and two Presidential Suites. Each guest room features natural light, Zebrano marble bathrooms, 24-hour in-room dining and a diffuser featuring the hotel's Red Flower Oakwood scent.
The hotel has a variety of food and beverage options.
- Kingbird is a dual-concept restaurant offering a contemporary dining room with an energetic bar, riverfront outdoor seating and an elegant dining room for a prix fixe dinner. The menu features ingredient-driven American cuisine with a French twist, paired with a global wine list.
- The Next Whisky Bar, carved into the lobby, stands vertical with an undulating wall of custom whisky bottles featuring labels sculpted and stamped out of metal, bathing the space in a bronze glow. An expansive spirit list highlights whisky, bourbon and rye from small-batch producers and large distillers, and a variety of cigars are available for purchase to enjoy on the terrace.
- Top of the Gate, a palatial rooftop with 360-degree views of the Potomac River, the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument, will open this summer. The hotel's first-ever rooftop lounge will feature heat lamps and a fire pit, where guests can enjoy drinks and food.
The property will also debut the 12,000-square-foot Argentta Spa this summer.
The Watergate Hotel features 27,000 square feet of meeting and function space with 11 flexible indoor and outdoor spaces. A new addition to the historic property is the 7,000-square-foot Moretti Grand Ballroom, featuring modern technology, LED light panels and a statement wall built from Gucci marble along with an additional 10,000 square feet of outdoor space overlooking the Potomac.
