House Republicans approved a spending bill that includes $1.1 billion to fight the Zika virus in a late-night vote, while protesting Democrats held a sit-in demanding votes on gun control bills.
The House deal arrived after previous conflicting votes in May between the House and Senate requesting $622 million and $1.1 billion in emergency funding to combat Zika, respectively. The Obama administration threatened to veto the House’s original $622 million version of the bill.
President Obama requested $1.9 billion to combat the Zika virus back in February. The House’s version of the Zika bill will shuffle $750 million from other health departments, which has sparked additional controversy.
