PITTSBURGH
Uber will begin providing travelers an option to request a self-driving car—manned by a human backup driver, at least in the test phases—starting later this month in Pittsburgh. Other companies, such as Google, are testing autonomous vehicles, but have yet to offer rides to the general public.
The Associated Press reported that the first self-driving cars in Uber’s fleet will be Ford Fusions, but Bloomberg noted that custom, autonomous Volvo XC90s will be launching this summer as well.
According to the Associated Press Uber will be offering free rides when it debuts the self-driving vehicle service in Pittsburgh as a way to entice people to try it out. Uber said that there are no immediate plans to deploy autonomous cars in other cities, but that it is a possibility in the future.
