As Hurricane Matthew wreaks havoc in the Caribbean, the southeast coast is on high alert with Florida Gov. Rick Scott declaring a state of emergency for the entire state and South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley calling for a complete evacuation of the state’s coast (1.1 million people) on Wednesday, October 5.
“If [Hurricane] Matthew directly impacts Florida there will be massive destruction that we haven’t seen in years,” said Gov. Rick Scott in a press conference held on Tuesday, October 4.
Hurricane Matthew is expected to near the Florida coast and southeast coast as soon as this Friday, October 7, and has potential to remain a major hurricane when it does, bringing 130 mph winds and powerful storms.
North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory also declared a state of emergency for 66 counties in central and eastern parts of the state on Monday, according to a report from the Associated Press.
