As Tropical Storm Lane continued to move away from the Hawaiian Islands over the past few days, life in the islands is quickly returning to normal, according to George D. Szigeti, president and CEO of the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), with no major impact to the tourism infrastructure.
“Tropical Storm Lane began moving in a westerly direction this past weekend away from the Hawaiian Islands and is no longer seen as a threat to residents and travelers,” Szigeti said. “All of Hawaii’s airports, hotels and resorts throughout the state—and the Hawaii Convention Center—are open.
“Those scheduled to have meetings, conventions or incentive programs in the Hawaiian Islands can continue their planning with confidence,” he added.
Most forest lands and state parks across the Hawaiian Islands have also reopened.
Hawaii Tourism Authority: Visitors Should Monitor Local Weather Forecasts
The storm dropped more than 50 inches of rain across the Hawaiian Islands, and as of Monday, August 27, some areas across the state continued to experience localized rainfall and flash flooding. The HTA is advising residents and visitors to monitor local weather forecasts and to be cautious and stay safe.
Meanwhile, some areas experienced power outages during the storm, and Maui witnessed a brush fire. As in other parts of the Hawaiian Islands, all resorts are open on Maui and taking great care of visitors, according to Randy Parker, director of sales, international, meetings, conventions and incentives for the Maui VCB.
“During the crisis, our hospitality professionals performed above and beyond the call by taking care of any stranded visitors and accepting new visitors that braved the storm, all at the same time taking care of their employees,” Parker said. “Safety was the highest concern followed by making all comfortable.
“They endured the storm, fires in Kaanapali and loss of electricity,” he added. “It was wonderful to witness how all came together.”
HTA is continuing to keep its special alerts page updated with information.
