The Events Industry Council (EIC), the umbrella group representing more than 30 meetings and events industry organizations, appointed a new CEO to help advance the events industry and promote sustainable events.
Amy Calvert, who currently works as senior vice president of convention sales and services for Visit Baltimore, was announced as the EIC’s new leader. Calvert replaces Karen Kotowski, who resigned from the EIC in January 2019 after 10 years leading the organization.
The EIC said Calvert was selected from a pool of more than 50 candidates following a global search led by executive search firm Vetted Solutions in collaboration with Saxton Bampfylde, and in partnership with SmithBucklin, which manages the EIC.
The search committee was chaired by Carina Bauer, CEO of IMEX Group, who said that Calvert’s dedication to advancing the industry and vision for the EIC were key factors resulting in the search team’s decision.
“I am honored and grateful to the EIC Board for opportunity to lead this dynamic organization comprised of exceptionally passionate, innovative and dedicated industry professionals,” Calvert said in a statement. “The mission of the Events Industry Council and the vast opportunities to support and strengthen our industry through collaboration and global advocacy inspires me.
“Through my time in the industry, I have seen firsthand the positive economic and the lasting social impact the event industry has on communities,” she continued. “It is essential we continue to share our story and inspire the hearts and minds of those we serve and celebrate the achievements of the dedicated professionals that pursue excellence in their career journey.
"Events have the power to transform lives and to shape a better world," Calvert said.
Before joining Visit Baltimore, 30-year hospitality industry and destination marketing veteran Calvert held positions at the Long Beach Convention Bureau and IHG.
Sustainable Meetings Played a Role in Calvert Hiring
The EIC said Calvert’s appointment will be beneficial due to its recent rebranding and focus on promoting sustainable events.
“This is an exciting and fitting time for the events industry and for our organization to have a new leader as we look to enhance our CMP program, expand educational programming and increase our focus on enabling sustainable events,” said Tina Wehmeir, chair of the EIC’s Board of Directors, in a statement.
"Building on the momentum from our rebranding, the board is focused on redefining our mission, vision and long-term global strategic plan in partnership with our new CEO."
