After passing a bipartisan vote in the House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate has introduced the Hotel Fees Transparency Act of 2024 for a vote.
The legislation would prohibit hotels and short-term rental units from hiding or otherwise not listing required fees save for government charges and taxes. The act will also prevent third-party platforms, metasearch results and travel agencies from omitting these fees when listing pricing.
The Congressional action follows several lawsuits filed against a few large chain hotel brands for having hidden fees. The bill is currently in the introduction stage. Having been passed by the House of Representatives with a bipartisan vote, it now is waiting for the Senate’s vote. If enacted, the law would require companies to list the total cost for consumers before tax or other government related charges.
If approved in the Senate, the Hotel Fees Transparency Act of 2024 is set to go into effect 450 days (about 1 year and 3 months) after the date of enactment.
American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), which represents the hotel industry, has been quoted in HOTELS Magazine in thanking the representatives and supporting a standard of transparency in the industry. As of right now this act is waiting to pass a vote in the Senate.
