Former Meetings Today editor and longtime meetings industry trade journalist Maria Lenhart has co-written a new book that delves into the deep history and fascinating personalities associated with the Cape Cod, Massachusetts, region.
Secret Cape Cod and the Islands: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure, which was co-written by Lenhart’s Hard News Travel Team partner Linda Humphrey, explores the intersection of Cape Cod with notable figures such as writer Kurt Vonnegut Jr., playwright Tennessee Williams, television’s “Mr. Rogers” (aka Fred Rogers), Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Bob Dylan and writers from the Harlem Renaissance, among many others.
The book also delves into haunted mansions, Gilded Age mansions and the region’s whaling era, in addition to standard travel guide fare such as the best places for watching a sunset, swimming in hidden ponds and where one can sit down for a chef-prepared feast in a farm field, for example.
“Linda and I had great fun exploring little-known aspects of the Cape as well as researching the backstories of well-known places,” Lenhart said. “There was so much we learned along the way, particularly about how culturally diverse the region is, including the Jamaican, Portuguese and Cape Verdean influences on local cuisine and attractions.
