A Royal Venue Renovation
The City of London Corporation approved more than $200 million in funding to support critical repairs and upgrades to the Barbican Centre as part of the Barbican Renewal Programme, a five-year project to upgrade the historic arts, conference and events center.
Built in 1982 by Queen Elizabeth, London’s Barbican Centre is one of the most prominent conference and international arts venues in the world. The venue can accommodate events of between 10 and 2,000 attendees in its fully equipped concert hall, theaters, conference suites and boardrooms.
“The Barbican Centre is a fantastic international venue with an exciting future,” said City Corporation Policy Chairman Chris Hayward. “This funding underlines our support, recognizing its unique role as a leading cultural institution and driver of economic growth, contributing [approximately $108 million] a year to the UK economy and supporting around than 1,100 jobs across London.”
The proposed funding will allow the venue to upgrade its foyers, terrace and conservatory, which also serves as the largest glasshouse in central London with over 1,500 species of plants and trees. Construction is slated to begin in 2027 after a design process led by Allies and Morrison, Asif Khan Studio and Buro Happold, with feedback and ideas being sought from the public and other stakeholders.
