Beginning in 2021, U.S. citizens, as well those from other visa-free countries, will have to take an additional step before traveling to the 26 countries in the European Union’s Schengen Area. Currently, U.S. citizens visiting these countries just need a valid U.S. passport for stays up to 90 days.

Effective January 7, 2019, visitors to Japan will pay a 1,000 yen (about $9 USD) departure tax when leaving the country, regardless of nationality. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reported that the tax is expected to expand and enhance the country’s tourist infrastructure.
