Five North Dakota tourism entities have received 2012 Tourism Expansion Grants from the North Dakota Department of Commerce, Tourism Division. These grants support the expansion of existing facilities—including a meeting venue—the construction of new ones or infrastructure development.
Created in 2007, Tourism Expansion Grants are matching grants requiring the sponsor to provide one dollar for every dollar of grant money being requested. The total amount of grant dollars awarded for this program is $100,000, with individual grant amounts ranging from $5,000 to $24,000.
Recipients of the 2012 Expansion Grants are: Dakota Sun Gardens and Winery, in Carrington, for expansion of its winery building in order to host larger groups and events; Indian Hills Resort, in Garrison, for an expansion of its lodging facilities and campsites. The project also includes upgrading existing water and sewer lines, which will allow it to extend its operating season; Eastview Campground at Badlands Trail Rides, Killdeer, for the addition of modern cabins.
Church Theater Renovation, New Rockford—The Dakota Prairie Regional Center for the Arts recently acquired the former Methodist Church building, which is being converted to a theater to complement the existing Opera House and provide space to offer dining services to patrons; and Sheyenne Oaks Horse Camp, Kindred, which will use the grant to provide lodging through the renovation of a 1903 cabin, construction of a new cabin and purchase of "teepees" with modern amenities at the facility, adjacent to the Sheyenne National Grasslands.
